Kris Baum’s photography cannot be placed in any one category. His unique style moves across advertising, commercial, portraiture and fashion projects for small / medium businesses, design & advertising agencies and other arty individuals.
Kris picked up his first camera when he was sixteen as part of a high school art subject and photographed urban landscapes in and around Sydney and Chinatown, as well as homeless street characters in Surry Hills. Money and good times however, lured him into the dark depths of the corporate world weekend warehouse raves. It wasn’t until migrating to London years later on a mission to find better dance music and beer that Kris re-ignited his passion for creativity and photography.
Becoming a finalist in the ‘Hodge Award’ – Guardian UK Newspaper’s renowned photography competition ignited the project Subterrania, exhibiting multiple times throughout London as well as selling prints through Selfridges. Subterrania won further awards in Australia as well as commissions from top construction firms worldwide such as Balfour Beatty Construction. His architecture work now pioneers a colour saturated, almost surreal expression of urban architecture often likened to Jeffrey Smart the famous urban landscape painter.
Following on from landscape & architecture subjects, Kris’ portrait work has led him to photograph some well known people of contemporary Australia including including Anne Geddes, Morris Iiemma, Akira Isagara, The Vines, Potbelleez, Dita Von Teese and Ken Done. His unique portraits on Sydney subcultures made him a finalist in the nationwide Moran Portrait Prize mulitple times.
Pushing his creative edge, ten years after becoming that Guardian photography finalist, Kris continues to work in many other projects and genres. Kris works out of his photography studio in Balmain, Sydney. With a highly experienced team, he is now producing cutting edge commercial photography for advertising, communications and marketing clients using a mixture of landscapes, portrait, fashion and reportage.
